Winter in the Scottish Highlands

Visiting the Scottish Highlands between December and February offers an entirely different, serene atmosphere compared to the crowded summer months.

Many people from all over the world visit the Highlands in the Winter months, whether it be for Christmas, Hogmanay or just for the weather itself with the beautiful scenery.

Or maybe, just maybe some local Single Malt Whiskey's.

Glen Affric

Glen Affric is one of the finest of all Scotland's glens. It features a fabulous variety of scenery and is deservedly popular with walkers. The glen begins amongst the steep, bare mountains of Kintail far in the west.Further downriver is beautiful Loch Affric, at the foot of the highest mountains north of the Great Glen. The middle part of the Glen is a National Nature Reserve, magnificently wooded with Scots Pine - one of the last remnants of the original Caledonian Forest.

The Scottish Capercaillie

The Scottish capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is the world's largest living grouse, often compared to a turkey in size. It is entirely restricted to native Caledonian pine forests and commercial conifer plantations in northern Scotland. Currently listed as a critically endangered "Red List" species, the population hovers around just 500 individuals.

The Cairngorms National Park is the last true stronghold for the capercaillie in the UK, home to over 80% of the population. Because these giant woodland grouse are critically endangered and highly sensitive to disturbance, the best and most responsible way to spot them is by visiting managed wildlife hubs or hiring a local guide.

Inverness Town House

Inverness Town House is a magnificent, historic 19th-century Victorian building located in the heart of Inverness, Scotland, currently serving as a venue for civic functions, weddings, and conferences.

There are however 1-hour tours allow you to see the historic grand hall, council chambers, and ornate staircases fully decorated for Christmas.
Cost: Historically, these specific holiday tours have been offered free of charge, though booking online in advance via platforms like Eventbrite is strictly required

There are no guided tours available in January.

The Falls of Foyers

The Falls of Foyers on the southern shores of Loch Ness offer a dramatic winter excursion. Plunging 140 feet into a deep, wooded gorge, this iconic Highland waterfall is framed by frosted pines and stark rocky cliffs, making for a striking, highly rewarding hike.

The Surroundings: The gorge and ancient woodlands are often blanketed in frost, and on clear winter days, they offer stunning glimpses of snow-capped mountains and Loch Ness through the bare trees.

Uile-bheist Distillery & Brewery

Uile-bheist Distillery & Brewery is a modern, sustainable craft producer located right in the heart of Inverness along the River Ness.
It is the first joint distillery and brewery to open in Inverness in 130 years, combining artisanal beer brewing with Scotch whisky production.

Crafting exceptional single malt whiskies and local beers, heavily themed around Scottish folklore and mythology (the name "Uile-bheist" translates to "Monster" or "Beast" in Scottish Gaelic)

Glen Ord Distillery

Glen Ord Distillery (branded as The Singleton of Glen Ord) is one of Scotland's oldest and largest active whisky distilleries.
Founded in 1838 by Thomas Mackenzie, it sits on the edge of the Black Isle peninsula and serves as the flagship visitor experience for The Singleton brand. The site underwent a massive modernisation in 2022, winning Visitor Attraction of the Year at the 2024 Icons of Whisky Scotland Awards.

The distillery is located roughly 15 miles north-west of Inverness in the village of Muir of Ord

Tomatin Distillery

Tomatin Distillery is one of the highest distilleries in Scotland. It sits 315 metres above sea level in the Monadhliath Mountains.

Founded in 1897, Tomatin grew to become the largest malt whisky distillery in the world during the 1970s. Today, under the ownership of Japan’s Takara Shuzo company, it focuses on premium single malts. Its signature style is light, fruity, and highly delicate. This character comes from the soft, mineral-free waters of the Alt-na-Frith burn.

The distillery is located roughly 16 miles south of Inverness right off the A9.

Worry not if your the driver visiting a distillery!

Ask for "Driver’s Drams". If you are driving the snowy Highland roads, Scottish drink-drive laws are strictly zero-tolerance. All of these distilleries will gladly pack up your tasting samples into little takeaway bottles so you can enjoy them safely back at "The Tree Hoose" later.
